The Role
Reporting to the Manager of Plant Services/Tool Machine Design, you will join a team that includes one other Automation Engineer. We run a medium industrial machining and light assembly operation with a very high mix and low-to-medium volume of SKUs, primarily custom engineered and built to order. We are vertically integrated, with both mechanical and electromechanical solutions.Your primary responsibility will be to develop, evaluate and improve manufacturing methods, including optimizing processes, tooling and machinery in order to ultimately produce quality products. Most of your activities will be project related, within the context of ongoing continuous improvement. In addition, you will provide troubleshooting and other day-to-day support for a wide variety of manufacturing and assembly equipment.
At any given time you will be managing multiple projects in what we call a "staggered parallel" approach. A typical project will last three to four months, although that will vary. You will "own" projects from end to end, including design, working with tooling technicians, coordinating with vendors, and leading implementation efforts in partnership with people in different functional areas.
More specifically, you will:
- Apply modern automation technologies to develop, evaluate, and improve manufacturing methods while utilizing knowledge of product design, materials, fabrication processes, tooling and production equipment capabilities, assembly methods, and quality control standards
- Design optimal processes, tooling and machinery to produce quality products that meet demand, safety, and productivity requirements
- Strive to continuously improve tooling, machinery and processes resulting in higher productivity, quality and safety
- Confer with product design staff to develop tooling and processes that ensure efficient production methods
- Provide project management for cost improvement projects, including establishing specifications, securing quotes, submitting capital expenditures, and working with the Operations Team and Associates to implement the project through Kaizen/Lean methods
- Provide support to the production floor in solving problems with existing tooling and processes
- Lead/participate in Kaizen events to drive improvements
- Track performance metrics and recommend or take action to correct when negative trends occur
